Background [ ]

Based in Skyrim and headquartered in The Ratway beneath the city of Riften, members of the Thieves Guild are renowned for causing trouble in the city and are held largely responsible for the corruption of the metropolis'southward markets. Members of the society specialize in stealing objects of varying value or loaning septims to potential entrepreneurs or to help someone pay off their debts, in hopes of a payback. Most citizens view them unfavorably; Mjoll the Lioness has made information technology her duty to maintain gild in Riften and pledges to dismantle the society. Maven Blackness-Briar, the flush and unscrupulous owner of the pop Black-Briar Meadery, consorts with the guild in exchange for their financial aid and protection. The guild has an uncanny luck due to certain members striking upwards a bargain with the Daedric Prince, Nocturnal, to serve every bit guardians to her temple.

The order has a potent agree in politics and law enforcement due to their ability to bribe, intimidate and extort the officials and guards of any hold past exploiting their greed or by threatening to reveal embarrassing and potentially damning secrets to the public.

History [ ]

The Ragged Flagon - Cistern, home of the Thieves Society

Origins [ ]

Little is known nearly when and how the Thieves Club of Skyrim was founded, just it is rumored to take been effectually as long as Riften has.[1] Equally the Fourth Era continued, the Thieves Guild slipped further and further into obscurity and the members and regular clients began to leave (with the exception of Maven Black-Briar).[one] [two] [three] [4] [5]

The order was previously believed to be completely fictional; in Oblivion, if asked almost the guild, guards would only state that at that place was no such affair. However, the Thieves Club has become well known and, in fact, well renowned for their thievery and exploitation.[6]

The guild has some close association with the Dark Brotherhood which becomes credible in "The Silence Has Been Broken" quest for the Dark Brotherhood, in which the Dragonborn must bring an amulet given by Amaund Motierre to Delvin Mallory, a member of the Thieves Social club.

Quaternary Era [ ]

Second Century [ ]

In 4E 176, which is xx-five years before 4E 201,[seven] when the quests of the Thieves Club in Skyrim take place, the Thieves Lodge was in a golden age. Their headquarters was a palace, in which they had their own blacksmith, alchemist, traders, fences, and many assembly throughout Skyrim. The Thieves Order was very powerful and dominant and was feared and respected by near of Skyrim.[four] Even with the Guild being in a Golden Age, the Guildmaster Gallus Desidenius was slowly and carefully organizing and planning long-term heists which included heists on museums, art galleries, stores, and government treasuries in an effort to continue and strengthen the Guild'southward presence in Skyrim. I of these heists included the heist of the Eyes of the Falmer, which required a deep understanding of the Falmer, their language, and their writing system.[eight]

3rd Century [ ]

Past 4E 201, the Order was on the brink of collapse, with the people of Skyrim condign bolder and less fearful of the organization. The Gild had made plans to bring itself back to its former glory and constitute itself as a major faction in Skyrim. A bang-up number of small-scale jobs were needed to exist completed; this was followed by the completion of a contract by a notable person found in Whiterun, Solitude, Windhelm and Markarth. A special request was not needed to be completed in Riften, because the Thieves Guild already had a major presence in the city and was preeminently dominant throughout the area.

Nocturnal's Expletive [ ]

When the first group of Nightingales sought guidance from Nocturnal, she accustomed, but in return, the Guild would have to go on the Skeleton Central safe in its chamber. All the same, when Mercer Frey secretly assassinated the current Guildmaster Gallus and took the key from its chamber, the Club lost Nocturnal'due south favor. The curse was and so activated, causing the Order to go to a country of decay and ill-repute among their clients.

Shadowmarks [ ]

Main article: Shadowmarks

One of the major aspects of the Thieves Gild in Skyrim is their use of a code the guild-members use to communicate with each other without speaking. This unique code is known as Shadowmarks. The code is composed of nine different symbols, each with their own significant. These Shadowmarks are commonly placed on door-frames on the fronts of buildings which signal to a Guild member if the edifice is safe, dangerous, contains important items or loot, houses another member of the Guild or another thief, as well as other important uses that could assistance a Society member or other thieves.[9]

Connection with the Dark Brotherhood [ ]

The Thieves Guild has a stiff connection with the Dark Brotherhood, which is especially evident in the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild in Skyrim. Despite their differences in organization, purpose, and policies, the Thieves Gild and the Dark Brotherhood rely on each other for support.[ten] [11] It is notable that Delvin Mallory and Astrid of the Brotherhood have had a good relationship, both as friends and as business associates.[5]

Joining [ ]

To join the Thieves Guild the Dragonborn must enter Riften and speak to Brynjolf, a red-headed Nord male, who tin can be institute during the day in the Riften Marketplace between 8:00 a.chiliad. – eight:00 p.m or in The Bee and Affront at dark. During the mean solar day, in one case the Dragonborn is within proximity, Brynjolf will automatically attempt to strike up a conversation in which the Thieves Guild prerequisite quest "A Chance Organisation" can be started. Alternatively, in the evenings past viii:00 p.m., the Dragonborn can see Brynjolf at The Bee and Affront inn, at which time he will tell the Dragonborn to speak with him during the twenty-four hours at his stall in the Riften Marketplace.

Brynjolf, when encountered during the daytime, will give the Dragonborn instructions to steal Madesi'due south Silver Ring from the strongbox located under his stall and then plant it inside of the pocket of Brand-Shei, the local full general stall owner. He is identified as the simply male Dunmer in the crowd. Brynjolf volition start a distraction by calling everybody inside the surface area to listen to the story of his latest production that he is selling, which is obviously a ruse. During this time, carry out the plan equally discussed with Brynjolf. Planting the ring volition instantly terminate Brynjolf's tale he is telling to the crowd thus dispersing information technology. He will now tell the Dragonborn to come across him in the Ragged Flagon downwards in the Ratway to discuss membership.

Even if the Dragonborn fails to larn the band, joining the Gild is still possible considering Brynjolf says he still believes the Dragonborn has what it takes, despite failure of the quest. However, information technology will initially make a few members of the guild treat the Dragonborn with more disdain.

Modest jobs [ ]

Delvin and Vex offer an unlimited number of radiant quests known as "jobs." The target item and location for each are generated randomly within Whiterun, Markarth, Windhelm, Solitude and Riften. Jobs tin can be accepted and denied at will. It is possible (and efficient) to run a job for Delvin and one for Vex simultaneously (the Tips section below has more than information). The reward for each mission is leveled, between 50 and 800 Gold. After performing five small jobs in a single city, excluding Riften, a special job will be unlocked for it. Killing those crucial to the job results in a failure, and no payment is received. Since in that location are no count statistics provided for these jobs, the merely ways to determine how many have been done are to go through the completed jobs in the quest log and read the objective for each, since they listing the city in which the job was done, or to keep track manually.

With The Elderberry Scrolls V: Dragonborn installed, jobs such as "The Bedlam Job" tin can likewise be generated in Raven Rock on Solstheim, although there are no special jobs nor city influence quests on the isle.

Delvin Mallory, member of the Thieves Social club and master sneak trainer

Delvin Mallory's jobs [ ]

  • The Bedlam Chore – Steal enough items to become a five hundred money value within the assigned hold. Legally taking an item from a house may non count towards it.
    • A very constructive method is stealing an expensive item, going to a secluded location, and so dropping it and picking information technology up a few times. Each time the item is picked up it counts as theft.
    • An easy yet slightly rare method of reaching the required goal is to accept a "Sweep Job" from Vex at the same time, and then quit and retake the jobs until they are both in the same city. Alternatively to quitting, take the quest from one, salve earlier checking the other and reload if an undesired result comes up. When the sweep job is completed, the bedlam chore will be washed as well.
    • If the Dragonborn has non yet collected all of the Stones of Barenziah, finding and stealing 1 is enough to achieve the goal by itself.
    • Some other easy fashion is to steal from forges. 500 Gold worth of something can easily be found.
    • Yet some other easy way is to raid the palaces of the Jarls.
    • Depending on dragon attacks and what quests the Dragonborn has completed, in that location may be houses in each Hold which are no longer occupied due to NPC death. These houses will respawn loot. Instance: Nepos' Business firm is unoccupied after completing "The Forsworn Conspiracy," and contains enough loot to complete a bedlam chore by itself.
    • Pickpocketing items does not count.
  • The Line-fishing Job – Pickpocket an detail from a given target.
    • Tin can exist hard, but the quest item has unremarkably a higher success per centum for pickpocketing than is normal, hence it is not bad training for this skill.
    • Saving earlier pickpocketing the particular allows cases where the Dragonborn is defenseless to exist forgotten.
    • These are also good jobs to take to unlock the Thief accomplishment.
    • A rather catchy line-fishing job is to steal Olava the Feeble'southward silvery ruby ring, due to the fact that normally, when she is non asleep, she is sitting on a bench with almost no way to sneak upwards to steal her band. However, one does not need to be completely hidden to successfully pickpocket.
  • The Numbers Job – Modify the ledger book at a given business. This is the easiest of Delvin's three jobs to complete. Near the ledger volume, there might be a business concern safe box containing some Gold.

Vex, member of the Thieves Guild and Master Lockpicking Trainer

Vex's jobs [ ]

  • The Burglary Task – Steal an particular from a house.
    • Can be done during the twenty-four hour period or night hands; as the owner either sleeps or is at piece of work
    • The best time to do this sort of job is around 7:30 PM, as there is no i at domicile or on the street.
  • The Heist Job – Steal an item from a concern.
    • If tried during the day the shop owner volition virtually probable follow the Dragonborn around.
  • The Shill Job – Plant a stolen item in a grapheme'due south home.
    • Similar to burglary. Relatively easy, considering that the only "illegal" part of the task is trespassing, and getting caught by the guards any time during it does not event in failure.
  • The Sweep Job – Steal three specific items from a house.

Urban center influence quests [ ]

After completing five small jobs in a city (with the exception of Riften and Raven Rock), Delvin will offer a special job to restore Thieves Guild influence in that city. These quests can exist taken in any order. The metropolis influence quests are necessary in society to complete "Under New Direction" and assume the title of Guildmaster. When they are all completed, the guild can return to its former glory. (However, earlier completing them all, see the bugs reported for "Nether New Management.") Condign Guildmaster allows access to the Guild Master'due south Tribute Chest.

Each metropolis influence quest that is completed will add a merchant stall to the Ragged Flagon. In addition, the gold available to fences throughout Skyrim gradually increases every bit these quests are completed, up to a maximum of 4,000 Gold. The third and 4th metropolis influence quests will each add a new recruit to the Guild too: outset Garthar, and then Ravyn Imyan.

Quest Prerequisite City Reward
Imitation Amnesty 5 small jobs in Whiterun Whiterun One new merchant'south stall.
Summerset Shadows 5 small jobs in Windhelm Windhelm Unlocks Niranye every bit a fence (if she did not human action aggressive and was not killed when talked to during the quest).

I new merchant'south stall.

Silver Lining 5 modest jobs in Markarth Markarth Unlocks Endon as a fence.

One new merchant's stall.

The Prissy Sload v pocket-sized jobs in Confinement Solitude One new merchant'southward stall.
Deliver Moon Sugar to Ri'saad Complete 3 city influence quests. N/A Khajiit Caravans volition offer a debate too every bit a pocket-size gold reward from Tonilia

While related, "Deliver Moon Sugar to Ri'saad" is not itself a metropolis influence quest. It is given by Tonilia rather than Delvin Mallory, and is not a prerequisite for "Under New Management."

Merchants [ ]

Proper name Service Available
Syndus Fletcher and Blacksmith After completing offset city influence quest.
Herluin Lothaire Alchemist and Enchanter After completing second city influence quest.
Vanryth Gatharian Fletcher and Blacksmith After completing tertiary urban center influence quest.
Arnskar Ember-Master Blacksmith Later completing all four metropolis influence quests.

Although these unlocked merchants work for the order, they practise not human activity equally fences and therefore do not buy goods marked as stolen. (Note: If the Windhelm quest is completed before all others, Herluin Lothaire may move instead of Syndus.)

Tips [ ]

The fastest possible method for completion is to disable automated saves (on Travel, on Character Bill of fare), take Numbers jobs from Delvin and take Burglary jobs from Vex. These are the 2 fastest respective chore types to complete. In one case one has factored in time lost from repeated saving and reloading the latter tip actually takes longer than speedrunning.

Alternatively, 1 can relieve before getting a new job, then ask for "Bedlam Jobs" from Delvin and "Sweep Jobs" from Vex (Hint: to avert going through the chat again, it is best to save once the dialogue is finished, but before the quest objective appears). Equally long as they are in the same metropolis, one time the Sweep Job is washed, "The Clamor Job" will be completed as well, substantially completing two tasks at once. If it is in a city whose influence quest has already been completed, quick loading and trying again is suggested.

Another way is to quit the chore Delvin and/or Vex assigned, and then inquire for the task over again. Generally, at that place are no negative repercussions for quitting jobs, excluding the multiple failed missions in the quest log and the short disapproving dialogue afterward each quit job. However, if the Dragonborn quits a "Sweep Job" in ane place and so gets that task once again after, they risk having difficulties stealing the items since the new/latest rendered particular could spawn inside the old item that is left from the outset job. For case, the Dragonborn could become a jeweled bullpen within another jeweled bullpen. On PC this can exist resolved by using the console and simply disable the outer/one-time item from the previously quit task.

It is also very helpful to keep track of how many jobs accept been done in each of the four holds that affair (Whiterun, Haafingar, Eastmarch, and the Reach). This makes information technology easier to choose the jobs to be kept or dumped to go on the relative numbers balanced. For instance, if jobs are washed in three holds, and nevertheless all 5 jobs are left to exercise in the other hold, then it can exist tedious to wait to be given jobs in that agree.

On PC, it is likewise possible to avoid doing the jobs birthday as urban center influence quests tin can exist started using the setstage console control. Each quest tin exist started past using the appropriate quest ID and setting the phase to ten.

Other quests [ ]

  • No Stone Unturned
  • Paid in Total

  • Sometimes when wandering out in the woods, the Dragonborn might exist confronted with a thief from the Thieves Club, who will attempt to rob them. • In the small-scale training room it is possible to find another complete set of Thieves Guild Armor scattered around the room. • If the Dragonborn does not have the total fix of basic Thieves Guild armor (whether sold, lost, etc.), and then after the "free upgrade to a piece of your option" option is received, all future interactions with Tonilia outcome in a dead-end word of upgrading the gear. The Dragonborn will be unable to fence anything with her. As well, the quests "Deliver Moon Sugar to Ri'saad" and "Under New Management" cannot be completed considering the armor trade is pending.
    •  360 PS3  As of Patch i.four, a complete ready of Thieves Guild Armor is found around the The Ragged Flagon - Cistern (training room) that Tonilia will accept if the Dragonborn loses the beginning prepare. This means that she volition upgrade it, which gives her new dialogue, allows here to starting time fencing once more. This allows the Dragonborn to complete the Thieves Gild quest line. This secondary fix of armor does respawn.
    • Alternatively, this could be circumvented past using the console to spawn replacement gear. As there are iii different sets of Thieves Guild Armor that can be spawned through the panel, the codes to spawn the starter set pieces are as follows:
      • role player.additem 000d3ac2 1
      • player.additem 000d3ac3 one
      • histrion.additem 000d3ac4 i
      • histrion.additem 000d3ac5 1
  •  PS3  After completing "Loud and Clear," Brynjolf may non assign the next quest and, when talking to him, he volition just reply, "Distressing lad/lass, I've got important things to do; we'll speak another time."
  •  PS3  After completing a small job to steal a piece of jewelry, if the Dragonborn has an enchanted piece of jewelry of the aforementioned kind regardless of how it was renamed, then when turning it in, the enchanted item may be taken instead of the 1 stolen for the quest.
  •  PC 360 PS3  Any gild members in the Lockpicking training room will say to the Dragonborn, "Yous're actually not supposed to be here," afterwards a failed attempt. There is no known cause, except for not being in the Club. Paying to get dorsum in fixes this.
  •  PC 360 PS3  Sometimes, if an unmarked quest is completed to rebuild the Social club before completing the main quest line, the Guildmasters chest may not spawn random gems and gold.
  •  PS3  If the quest "Trinity Restored" is started and the Dragonborn does not follow Brynjolf and Karliah immediately, they will go to the Nightingale Hall by themselves and and so go back to Riften. Brynjolf can exist establish walking effectually the Ragged Flagon - Cistern and if spoken to, says either, "I think we can trust Karliah, lets see what she'southward on almost" or, "I'm just every bit baffled as you lad/lass." This makes the chief quest line incommunicable to go on and tin can just exist stock-still past loading an quondam salve.
  •  360  All of the quests to return the larceny items volition immediately be resolved upon obtaining the Eyes of the Falmer (if not already turned in). This causes them to get normal objects, non quest objects, and Delvin will non offering to purchase any of them.
    •  PS3  This bug is fixed after patch 1.ix.
  •  PS3  Even later completing the unabridged Thieves Guild quest line (unlocking all cities, caravans, and becoming Guildmaster), it is possible that the fences in the other 4 cities will refuse to open dialogue with the Dragonborn.

Fifty-fifty if the Dragonborn does non attack the marking back, the mark may get killed by other townspeople or guards or the Dragonborn'southward follower. Upon looting the corpse for the target item, the quest will still be a failure when turned in. Delvin volition scold the Dragonborn proverb that "this isn't the Dark Brotherhood. Keep your blade clean."
  •  360  Sometimes during a "Burglary," "Heist," or "Clamor Job," when stealing from a business firm, if the Dragonborn is successful at stealing an object, the person living there will hire mercenaries. Should the Dragonborn obtain another task pertaining to that residence, upon entering the house, the mercenaries will be inside the firm. When they notice the Dragonborn, they continue to talk about "roughing him up" and then attack.
360  Sometimes the numbers quest given by Delvin in Haelga's Bunkhouse tin can glitch and be incommunicable to practice, as the marker volition show up floating on a wall instead of over the ledger book.

The just solutions are to reload a relieve or to quit the task.
  •  PC  Right after completing "A Chance Arrangement," Brynjolf may not answer the Dragonborn and will not give a second quest. One possible solution is to avert finishing the main quest line earlier becoming a thief.
  •  PC  During the quest "The Pursuit," when Delvin and Brynjolf are opening the door to the vault, the Dragonborn can find the door already opened, only for it to be closed and reopened by the characters mentioned above.
